The limiting factor for graduation isn't course count, it's the longest chain of prerequisites. Find the course everything else depends on and start it as early as you can. A chain three courses deep needs three terms no matter how light the rest of your schedule is.
CLEP, AP, and other credit-by-exam options can cover whole requirements at exam-fee prices instead of tuition. General-education and intro-level courses are the usual targets, and one exam can clear a whole term's worth of a prerequisite chain.
Use summer terms and online sections to unblock the chain. A single bottleneck course taken over the summer, often at a cheaper community-college rate, can pull an entire downstream sequence forward by a full term.
